The Story behind Filandia’s (very hype) “Helena Adentro”

When a young Colombian entrepreneur and his Kiwi partner left Australia and decided to create a restaurant with a modern take on Colombian food, they chose a little town hidden in the mountains: Filandia. And they named it “Helena Adentro”, meaning both “Helen is Inside” and poetically enough “The Eden Inside”.

We did not know about this stunning restaurant and bar so we followed the enthusiast recommendation of our hosts at Reserva El Cairo (READ: “Sleep at the very heart of the Cocora Valley“) and drove our way from Salento to Filandia (20 minutes).

Boho-chic restaurant “Helena Adentro” where every single corner is picture-ready (and Instagram-perfect!)

Filandia is a charming little town, less visited than neighboring Salento (READ: “Shop, eat and wander Salento’s cobbled streets“), filled with colonial houses with colorful wooden balconies overlooking the valley. Life seems simple, traditional and quiet in this corner of the earth. And then… you enter Helena Adentro. Welcome to the new Colombia: young, hype, vibrant and delicious!

Best party in town is by “Helena Adentro” super hype bar, serving exotic cocktails. How cool is this bar anyway?!

The restaurant was created 3 years ago by Alejandro, his girlfriend Jade from New-Zealand and a third partner when they hit seed money from their winning proposal at a national contest for new businesses in Colombia.

“It all started from scratch, our first stove was in fact… my mom’s!” Alejandro told us “then we got the funds to import proper and professional kitchen equipment that cannot be bought in Colombia” he recalls, showing us a modern white & zinc open kitchen. “I designed the Menu. Everything is local and organic, and we cook everything in our kitchen: from the sauces to the meat-plates.” he says, smiling proudly.

What we ate: Smoked hummus, Rabbit Sandwich and a modern take on arepas and sweet pork ribs. All with freshly squeezed fruit juices. Exquisite.

Alejandro and Jade dreamed of coming back to Colombia and to have their organic Finca in the Valley. Today, they rule the Valley’s hype nights with their boho bar and they amaze visitors with their exquisite menu.

They dreamt of a Finca, they created Eden.
